International Foundation Programme in Business

Choose this Foundation Programme to progress onto a range of business-related courses and begin an international career.

 

 

All students study a variety of English language modules which help prepare you for academic study in the UK. Our main focus is to teach you a range of skills so you can research and construct academic assignments in English. In addition, you will make and deliver presentations to other students, and practice note-taking skills to prepare you for university lectures.

The International Foundation Programme for Business consists of units totalling 120 credits. All candidates take four core units which are equal to 80 credits. The core units are:

Developing English Language Skills (20 credits)

English for Academic Purposes (30 credits)

Mathematics for University Study (10 credits)

Research and Study Skills for University Study (20 credits)

 

Additionally, you will also choose two elective courses worth a total of 40 credits from:

Business

Introductory Economics

(20 credits)

International Business

(20 credits)

Introductory Accounting

(20 credits)

 

These modules to give you specific subject knowledge which will prepare you for your university undergraduate courses.

Candidates must pass all core and elective modules to be awarded a certificate.

Below is a summary of the content of the three elective units of International Foundation Programme for Business.

International Business

On this course you will be introduced a range of business concepts including:

  • the nature of international business
  • the role of people and culture in an organisation
  • analysing customer needs
  • effective marketing strategies
  • business communication skills
  • how business finance works

This course is assessed with an exam (40% of total grade) and an assignment (60% of total grade). An assignment requires candidates to produce a written response to a set of one or more tasks, meeting a deadline imposed by STAR Exeter.

 

Introductory Economics

On this course you will be introduced a range of economic concepts including:

  • microeconomic theory
  • theories and policies of the price system
  • apply economic theory and analysis
  • examining the economic behaviour of consumers
  • understanding key economic measurements

This course is assessed with two examinations.

 Introductory Accounting

On this course you will be introduced a range of accounting concepts including:

  • the purpose of accounting
  • analysing the financial health of a business
  • understanding different types of assets and liabilities
  • calculating performance ratios
  • reporting corporate performance

This course is assessed with two examinations.

Course Length

 

  • Start September (Pre-Sessional Course + Foundation Programme): 9 months full time 25 hours per week
  • Start January ( Foundation Programme): 6 months full time 25 hours per week

 

 

Entry requirements:

 

Start January 2026 (Foundation Programme)

  • A minimum overall grade of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent or take STAR's test.
  • PLUS evidence of a successfully completed secondary school education in an appropriate range of subjects.

Start September 2026 (Pre-Sessional Course)

  • A minimum overall grade of IELTS 4.5 or equivalent or take STAR's test.
  • PLUS evidence of a successfully completed secondary school education in an appropriate range of subjects.

 

If you do not currently have IELTS 4.5 you can start an English language programme with STAR at any time, prior to commencing your IFP.
